Longevity reflects high standards

ELECTRICAL quality, safety and service continues at J H May (Electrical) Ltd as the family-owned company celebrates its 70th anniversary.

It takes a special commitment for a family to serve local businesses and communities since 1947.

John Herbert (JH) May and his wife Margaret established the Rushden-based business shortly after the Second World War when electrical installations on RAF stations including Fighter Command Underground Headquarters and Air Ministry experimental stations had been completed.

John’s son Michael and his wife Marilyn May succeeded as the 1960s became the 1970s and took over the running of the shop and contracting business based in Moor Road until 2005 when their son, Jonathan, and his wife, Angelina May, returned to the fold.

The company has now embraced the fourth generation with Georgia May responsible for the back-office challenges like invoices, wages and online sales and Harry May completing the third year of his Craft Apprenticeship. The hope is that Javier May will add to this new generation when he begins his apprenticeship in 2018.

Current stalwarts Paul Robinson, Senior Technician and Qualified Supervisor, and John Lack, another grandson of John Herbert, have each worked for the company for almost 34 of the 70 years.

Luk Reid has been with J H May since leaving school a dozen or so years ago, having completed work experience, a Saturday job and holiday work during his teens. Rose Gepp has also been a valuable member of the team sorting out the admin for more than 11 years.

The longevity of the family firm may in part be due to the wide client base and high standards. This means the company draws customers ranging from domestic properties and housing associations to local authorities via doctors, dentists, vets, kennels, catteries, churches, charities, farms, factories, shops, offices, pubs, cafes, schools, swimming pools and gyms.

Jonathan May said: “We all take great pride in the success of JH May (Electrical) Ltd and value the support of customers who have used our services throughout the decades.”
