Where new meets old

OLD meets new at The Axe and Compass, where stylish dining and contemporary surroundings are housed in a traditional pub that is said to date back to 1790.

Situated in the village of Ringstead, the pub has a long and varied history. It is currently run by Adam Taylor and his wife Victoria, reopening a year ago after an eight-week refurbishment that saw it transformed into a relaxing place to unwind and enjoy freshly prepared food and an excellent range of beers, wines and spirits.

Adam Taylor said: “It’s about a year since we reopened after the refurbishment and things are going very well. It’s a traditional village pub but it has a fresh, contemporary look – the pub has had its ups and downs through its long history but it’s looking good and doing well these days.”

The Axe and Compass offers freshly prepared food using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, including pork from its home-bred pigs, which roam freely in the wooded area on the family farm.

Lunchtime diners can choose from a comprehensive list that includes starters, mains, salads, sandwiches and a Butcher’s Board selection of steaks, while in the evening there’s a similar choice of fare, with the addition of some pub classics such as the pie of the day and sausages and mash, featuring the pub’s own renowned sausages, made with the aforementioned home-bred pork.

There’s also a Sunday roast and a list of lighter bites, while the last Wednesday of every month is Burger Night, where it’s £12.95 for a burger and accompaniments and a drink.

Adam added: “We want to make sure there’s something for everyone, and to use local produce and support local suppliers wherever possible. We regularly have guest cask ales from the likes of Nobby’s Brewery, and from the Hart Family Brewery, which is right here in Ringstead, alongside our regular choices.”
