Practice continues to grow

PETER Haddon and Partners (pHp architects) have recognised the strength in depth of their team by promoting four young architectural designers to Associate.

pHp have been in practice now for over 50 years and the partners are all third generation, signifying the commitment to attract, train and grow talent. The four new Associates reflect the success of pHp in recruiting and retaining good staff, through giving staff opportunity to work on and take ownership of large scale and complex projects. In the past couple of years the new Associates have between them delivered £50 million of research and development facilities, a 420-pupil new primary school, 610,000 sq ft of logistics space, and a £18 million project to reorganise a food production unit.

Having joined pHp in 2013 Jonathan Landeman, whose previous experience was on education buildings, was project architect on two buildings for GE in Stafford. Each building contains large double height research and development spaces, supported by open-plan offices, training and staff facilities. Jonathan developed the spatial and exterior design and integrated the structure and significant servicing within a simple, bold external form. The building fit-out was also co-ordinated by Jonathan, using pHp’s own space planning and interior design team.

The longest serving of the four is Chris Wayman, who joined in 2007 as a technologist and has since trained part time to become an architect. In the last three years he has designed and managed a project for a new primary school in Silverstone, which combines the existing infant and junior schools. The new school is at the cutting edge of design and construction, with the design of significant low energy off-site construction developed using a virtual model of the building.

Malkeet Flora has only been with the practice since 2014, but has proved adept at meeting tight programmes required by the rapidly developing logistics sector. In those three years Mal has completed 610,000 sq ft of logistics space over seven buildings: as well as undertaking numerous site appraisals.

Chris Sandford first came to work at pHp as a trainee student in 2006 and re-joined in 2010 after working in London. Chris is currently involved in probably the most complex of these projects, the re-working of a food production factory to create a national centre of excellence. This work is being carried out in 20 phases over three years, whilst the factory remains fully functional, and as such the project demands exceptional management and design skills.

Rob MacNaughton, Partner at pHp said: “The common factor in enabling these young designers to manage major projects has been their ability to work with clients and the other members of project and construction teams. pHp architects have a strong service led ethos and core, whilst we provide design leadership, we also respect the team effort that is required to create a new building.”
