Family business just keeps growing

MORE than 75 years in business is testament to the high standards and commitment the generations of one family have made to their business.

Whites Nurseries, based at Earls Barton, was set up by Philip White in the 1940s in a greenhouse behind the family home in West Street. Since then it has grown into a thriving enterprise which is now run by his grandsons, James and Edward White.

The brothers took over from their father Michael, who in the early 1980s made the move to Clay Lane where polythene tunnels were built alongside a warehouse and a farm shop.

Since then the committed team have built a strong wholesale sector which supplies a wide range of businesses across Northamptonshire. These include pubs, restaurants, care homes, professional caterers, nursery schools, schools, colleges, shops and hospitals.

Alongside the wholesale business, the family takes real pride in carrying on other traditions including the popular farm shop, which is open seven days a week. Alongside high-quality fresh fruit and vegetables the stock includes Newlands Farm local milk, local honey and preserves, homemade frozen meals and pastries, condiments and chutneys, curry sauces, pasta, baking ingredients, herbs and spices, sweets, bread, rolls and cakes, artisan drinks and juices and Gallones ice cream plus more.

They also have a small selection of plants, shrubs, compost, wooden sleepers and garden ornaments to also include logs, coal, kindling and a BBQ fuel range.

Edward said: “We really believe customers who use the farm shop are not only looking for fresh fruit and vegetables but appreciate the superb range of products we are able to offer.”

The events field, another tradition continued by Whites Nurseries, is available for hire. The impeccably maintained area is used for a host of modern and traditional events including regular car boot sales, classic car and bike meetings, country music festivals, rallies and country fairs.

Edward said: “We are very proud of being able to follow in our family’s footsteps and ensure we are continuing to meet the needs of today’s customers.”
