Transforming a town centre

AT the end of last year, permission was granted for significant expansion and extension to Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. GSSArchitecture have been appointed as architects, lead consultants and principal designers by Northampton Borough Council to lead the transformation of this vibrant centre of the town.

This is the first phase of the GSSArchitecture Cultural Quarter Masterplan to add a major extension creating a shoe gallery and enabling the town to showcase the world-renowned collection. In addition, a temporary exhibition gallery, events space, cafe and link space will be created. The new extension in a modern design will build on the distinctiveness of the local area.

In November 2017, planning permission was also approved for a Northampton town centre project that will see the conversion and extension of a former council building to create student accommodation, retail units and a new restaurant on Fish Street.

GSS have worked alongside key client teams for both projects within the town to respect and incorporate the existing architecture of the area.

To end the year, GSS completed the new headquarters for Northampton based, Opus Energy. The scheme included the remodelling and regeneration of an existing office which had previously housed Northamptonshire County Council. The design proposals transformed an outdated office building into a corporate HQ by creating a modern, flexible working environment that responded to the needs of the staff and clients and allowing for the use of up to date technology. The workspaces are flexible to allow staff to work in different ways whilst promoting communication between teams.

GSSArchitecture is a nationwide practice founded in 1879, making it one of the longest established firms in the country, with its head office based in Kettering. The practice has continued to grow and expand in order to deliver a range of recent national design successes as well as to prepare for a number of projects in the year ahead.

These Northampton-based projects will see significant changes to the centre of the town and are an example of a growing portfolio of regional projects GSSArchitecture are currently working on to enhance vibrancy, learning and leisure aspects in the community.
