Talking about money

THE realities of managing money will be taught to pupils across Northamptonshire thanks to a new initiative by Elsby & Co.

The project called #MONEYTALKS is being presented in a workshop style format by the accountancy firm and will be an interactive and fun experience designed to help sixth formers (aged 16-18) get to grips with the realities of budgeting in later life.

As well as the typical demands one might expect on monthly outgoings – such as socialising, rent and food – the accountants have designed a “selfie-tax’ for young people which will be one of the additional items they will have to allow for in their planning.

Kate Smart, Head of Resourcing for Elsby & Co, explained: “We wanted to come up with something fun, memorable and meaningful for the students. It’s about making budgeting and making money relevant and interesting for young people – that’s why we’ve come up with a few quirky ideas including the selfie tax.”

Elsby & Co’s #MONEYTALKS roadshow will start to roll out in February with several schools in the county already signed up for the free programme.

The workshops will take on a competitive feel with pupils grouped into teams and challenged with managing a monthly budget including dealing with bank loans and taxes. Each team will then be judged on how they spent and saved wisely and made their money last.

Kate added: “While it will be a fun and creative session, the idea deals with the very important issue of how to manage your finances after school. It will include how to get the best from saving, different types of credit and the implications of not looking after your money properly.

“We are offering it free to schools in the area. Most of our clients run small and medium sized businesses in the region and so we like to give back where we can. We also recruit locally and are always looking for the next generation of the best financial minds who would like the opportunity to grow and develop with Elsby & Co.”

Any teachers interested in this workshop for their school should contact Kate Smart at or on 01604 678470.
