Make your Apprenticeship Levy payment work for you
If your PAYE bill to HMRC is £3m* or more, you will pay 0.5% of the total towards Apprenticeships training from April 2017. You will be able to spend your contribution on training new or existing staff and the government will top-up your overall Levy payment by 10%.
There are some incentives for employing young apprentices including:
- A £1,000 payment towards the cost of employing an apprentice aged 16-18
- No National Insurance contributions for apprentices aged under 25.
Once you have paid into the Levy, funds expire after 24 months so workforce development will need to be planned well in advance to gain the maximum benefit.

New – Apprenticeship support for SMEs
Get advice on funding for Apprenticeships for those not paying the Levy. Under the new system, the government will pay 90% of training costs.
We have access to ESF funding that has been ear-marked to help SMEs to develop their workforce through Apprenticeships.
This support includes:
- Help with finding new recruits
- Support to get your current staff ready to start an Apprenticeship
- Free advertising for your vacancies
- An opportunity to gain profile through our Apprenticeship Ambassador scheme.
