Designers help bring motion sickness invention to reality

FARMER Tim Flaxman brought Northampton firm 3Di in to help bring his revolutionary new product for alleviating motion sickness to market.

TravelShades look like sunglasses and work by simplifying the visual signals to the brain which can significantly reduce the effects of motion sickness. TravelShades can potentially help millions of people alleviate the symptoms of motion sickness without the need for medication. The product is safe for use by adults and children when used in accordance with the instructions. Independent tests by Leeds Beckett University Retail Institute found that 89 per cent of motion sickness sufferers felt better wearing TravelShades.

Tim contacted 3Di, which is based at the Northampton Science Park, four years ago to gain professional help to guarantee TravelShades were stylish, functional and on-trend. 3Di’s directors, Tony Wye and Michael Lannie helped Tim manage the project and developed three unisex designs for TravelShades. The Classic Original, the Horizon Original and the Junior Horizon.

3Di’s expertise in design, prototyping and plastic moulding meant that Tim could use their knowledge to innovate and perfect every aspect of TravelShades.

3Di’s director, Michael Lannie said: “3Di rigorously tested the designs, varying the lenses, the frames and, of course, the colour. Once an intricate CAD file was created, 3D printed prototypes were created in-house to safeguard against any flaws. Once finalised, a vacuum casting was created to show potential corporate clients; this was made to look and feel as close to the final product to deliver a true sense of what TravelShades could offer.

“3Di led Tim through their signature four-step process: iDiscover, iDefine, iDevelop, iImplement. This simplified, cost-effective process granted Tim a continual visualisation of each step of his dream becoming a reality.”

“TravelShades are about to launch and the first batch is currently in production. It’s especially exciting for us to see something which is going to make a difference to people’s lives that we played an active role in designing.”
