New food courses next year

MOULTON College is delighted to launch its new food and drink courses which will take place at their new Food and Drink Innovation Centre. With the centre due for completion next summer, the college is now accepting applications for courses starting in September 2018.

The centre will house a contemporary food technology teaching facility, a large conference room, a sensory room to test products and even a micro-brewery.

The new courses available are a mix of post-16, university-level and part time, along with apprenticeships. Subjects include food technology, professional bakery, health and nutrition, food science and technology, food operations, HACCP, food safety and brewing, among others.

Stephen Davies, Principal at Moulton College, said: “We are excited to start recruiting the next generation of food specialists to our new range of food and drink courses.

“Food and drink manufacturing businesses across Northamptonshire and neighbouring counties have highlighted a real skills shortage which we aim to address. Our new Innovation Centre will help to equip students with the right skills to serve these businesses and to help drive the sector forwards.

“Moreover, local food companies will be able to make use the new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities which will allow them to carry out vital research and testing to improve existing products and develop new ones.

“It is anticipated that we will contribute £15 million to the local economy by 2021 through this new provision and we aim to provide over 300 qualifications each year.”

The food and drink industry in the East Midlands is closely related to the region’s agricultural strengths and is comparatively five per cent more productive than the country as a whole. It employs over 57,000 people and generates around £3.6 billion of GVA per year (figures from East Midlands Council).

Stephen Davies added: “We’d like to invite anyone interested in our new food and drink courses to come and chat to us at one of our open events on Saturday 11 November from 8.30am to 12 noon or Wednesday 30 November from 5pm to 7pm.”

Moulton College will be providing regular updates on the build and the courses that will be available through their social media channels and the website www.moulton.ac.uk
