Car specialists BCA, which has a base in Corby, has given college students an opportunity to have hands-on experience in the automotive industry.

The most recent event hosted was at the Corby campus of Tresham College, when BCA staff met with 40 Level 1 and Level 2 Motor Vehicle students to give them insights into careers within the country’s top automotive organisation. The students tried out electrical tasks, fault-finding, calculating and pricing jobs, plus a vehicle inspection. In addition, BCA, which has operations at the former Rockingham Speedway site, have provided valuable work placement opportunities for students.

Mohammad Milani, director of engineering and motor industries, said: “At the Bedford College Group we are preparing our students to meet the future needs of local and national employers. I am delighted that our motor vehicle team are championing this important partnership.”

Head of motor vehicle across the Bedford College Group, James Woolley, said the event was an exciting opportunity to bring together the motor mechanics of tomorrow with this major UK employer. The organisations are also launching an innovative apprenticeships project, in Bedford and Corby, which covers Motor Vehicle Technician and Automotive Refinished Technician, as well as the latest technology in electric vehicles.

Going forward, the group is delivering upskilling courses to 200 existing BCA staff to prepare them for dealing with the growing market of electric vehicles.
