The magic of the moving image

THERE’S no doubt about it, this decade has been the one in which the moving image made its presence well and truly felt in social media.

No longer a surprise or a gimmick, customers almost expect to have access to moving images when they visit a website – and posting links through social media drives traffic to what can be an effective way of showcasing a business.

But, as we have all experienced, the video has to be professionally shot and include excellent sound recording if it is to impress and not drive customers elsewhere.

Amy Lewis of AV Media set up her own business a year ago after leaving university – shooting videos for local businesses and building her client portfolio mainly through word of mouth.

“I’d trained in video production and bought all my equipment when I was still at university and, by chance, got asked to do a video for a local company,” said Amy. “It was then that I realised how popular video was becoming, businesses are using it more and more to tell visitors to their websites about their services.

“Video will give people the information they want in an accessible way, without them having to trawl through pages of text, so it’s a very effective tool.”

Starting with a discussion about what the clients wants to achieve through the video, the AV Media team will advise on content, setting and production before shooting begins.

“Technology allows us to control the background, so even if someone is being filmed in their own home, it’s possible to make it look like a studio setting,” said Amy. “The important thing is to make the video look professional. It is possible to record on smaller devices, even a mobile phone, but the quality of the picture, and, more importantly, the quality of the sound needs to be right. People won’t struggle through a muffled sound recording, they’ll turn off and look elsewhere.

“But when it is done well, video is a very effective tool and it’s so easy to share it through all the social media channels, so in marketing terms, it’s an excellent way to get your message across.”
