Data centre completed

BRIGGS & Forrester Engineering Services have completed works on the Data Centre project at the University of Birmingham after 8 months on site, working in collaboration with Willmott Dixon.

The facility includes services to specialist water cooling technology to keep the high intensity research computing systems cool. This has involved specialist pipework and filtration to maintain water quality required to bathe the computer chips. Multiple heat exchangers, staged pumping and controls were also provided.

In order to achieve flexible load capabilities Briggs & Forrester utilised high efficiency, free cooling adiabatic dry air coolers to provide market leading energy utilisation. The two data centres are split between college & professional services and research led initiatives.

Kim Yeandle-Higell, CX and Communications Manager at the University of Birmingham explained: “The new research computing data centre will be used to number-crunch large amounts of complex data-sets, such as those coming from genomics, and environmental and climate modelling. Processing huge amounts of data requires immense power, and generates a lot of waste heat. However, by using water-cooling technologies for our servers, we are well prepared.”
