Don’t throw money at it to stay in control

THE best advice to give in the workplace to keep everyone safe is to preach ‘if something isn’t right, do something about it or report it’.

It’s nice to know that good housekeeping, robust procedures and plans and trained staff that co-operate with each other really does cover most things and doesn’t cost the business a fortune (apart from a time investment).

A lot of the time when I have seen an Enforcement Notice served by an inspecting officer from the local authority, the aforementioned items regularly crop up.

Of course, in terms of fire safety, the usual extinguishers, alarms and other engineered solutions will need to be part of your active fire protection based on the level of risk present. Having an up to date Fire Risk Assessment will give you all the information you need in terms of what steps you need to take and where the shortcomings are.

Sometimes there may be no ‘one way only’ to solve an issue – often more cost effective compensatory measures can be taken to demonstrate the risk can still be reduced or eliminated in other ways – again my points in the second paragraph come to mind.

From a fire safety point of view, training and co-operation/coordination of staff is covered within the articles of The Fire Safety Order 2005 so please do not be dismissive, you must be able to demonstrate these areas have been covered and avoid possible prosecution.

For many of our clients for whom we conduct annual Fire Training and Risk Assessments this provides an excellent opportunity to sit down and discuss any existing issues, plans for the future and it’s a time to pick our brains.

Let’s make sure there are no grey areas and work together to keep people safe and property safe – stay ahead of the game.

Remember it’s your business, it’s your responsibility.
