‘The goal of a cleaner, healthier planet is within our reach’

The net zero message came across loud and clear to businesses at a workshop to highlight how they can play their part in tackling the climate crisis.

Delegates were at The Hub Prologis DIRFT to welcome the government’s Carbon Battle Bus, which made a stop at the development as part of a major national initiative on its way to Glasgow ahead of the COP26 climate change conference this month.

The Zero Carbon Tour has been organised by sustainability certification body Planet Mark to raise awareness of the actions already being taken by the business community to address the climate crisis and to take the net zero carbon message to communities across the UK in support of the UN’s Race to Zero campaign. The workshop at the Hub Prologis DIRFT focused on awareness of net zero terminology and setting credible net zero targets.

Delegates also heard presentations from local businesses already making progress towards their net zero targets.

The tour is backed by logistics property developer Prologis and other businesses, as well as the Institute of Directors. Prologis is the UK’s largest logistics property developer and has been developing net zero carbon buildings for more than a decade – each one is certified as net zero by Planet Mark, including the buildings at DIRFT.

Prologis has worked with Planet Mark for 13 years. “We are proud to say that every new logistics building we have developed in the UK during this period has been net zero carbon in construction,” said Prologis’ head of sustainability Simon Cox.

“We are passionate about promoting best practice when it comes to net zero carbon development and it is great that these workshops are providing much-needed help and advice around such a critical issue.”

Planet Mark’s aim for the Zero Carbon Tour is to help businesses to set net zero carbon targets and create realistic plans to achieve them.

Founder and chief executive Steve Malkin said: “This is a key moment in time and we are aiming to give energy and impetus to the urgency of tackling the climate crisis.

“Net zero brings more urgency and more opportunity for organisations to work together to tackle the climate crisis. In doing so, they are publicly demonstrating their commitments that they are organisations and brands that are here to support society and our transition to net zero.

“It is an exciting time of innovation and action with the goal of a cleaner, healthier planet within our reach.”
