Former apprentice takes career to next level

A FORMER apprentice from Northamptonshire has taken his career in construction to the next level and earned a foundation degree thanks to the support of David Wilson Homes’ bespoke site management sponsored degree programme.

Daniel Jackson, 22, has achieved a Foundation Degree in Residential Development and Construction after three years of training on site at David Wilson Homes’ Milton Keynes development Brooklands whilst studying at Sheffield Hallam University.

Daniel, who lives in Woodford, near Kettering, heard of the programme after being taken on as an apprentice by the five star housebuilder whilst studying at Moulton College for an NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry.

He applied for the David Wilson Homes sponsored construction degree to further his career in construction after enjoying working onsite and gaining hands-on experience.

Daniel still works at David Wilson Homes’ Brooklands development as an Assistant Site Manager and will continue to gain hands on experience whilst working with his onsite team.

He said: "I was told about the sponsored degree programme whilst I was still doing my apprenticeship and I thought it was a really good opportunity to further my career.

"I already knew I enjoyed working on site and gaining hands-on experience so the way the degree programme is spaced out was perfect for me as I was at university for one week every quarter and on site the rest of the time.

"David Wilson Homes is known for supporting its staff and encouraging career progression and in the future I would like to work my way up to being a Site Manager."

Throughout the course he worked at different developments across the South Midlands and received dedicated coaching from different Site Managers.

The sponsored Construction degree focuses on the principles of housebuilding and looks into the skills and knowledge of residential construction techniques and their practical use. This includes studies into construction law, technical design and commercial practise.

This enabled him to gain an all-round education, gaining technical experience and an academic education, to further his career in the housebuilding industry.

John Dillon, Managing Director at David Wilson Home South Midlands, said: "This sponsorship scheme is extremely important to us as it encourages future talent and allows us to invest in and support the future of the housebuilding industry.

"Our Site Managers and Assistant Site Managers are a vital part of our workforce in sustaining the quality of the homes we build and by taking the time to train people for this role, we are preparing for future growth."
