Machine safety made simple

PILZ Automation Technology was set to help local companies be machinery safety smart in 2015, with local Pilz Friday Clubs and regional Machinery Safety Alliance (MSA) events.

The Pilz Friday Club has been running since 2013 and has provided local businesses with free machinery safety seminars covering a wide range of topics from machinery regulations and standards to safety technologies and applications.

David Collier, Business Development manager at Pilz Automation Technology, said: “The Friday Club has been very popular, it’s a great way for local health and safety managers, technical directors and engineers to learn about new technologies and brush up on legislation and regulation knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere, with like minded people. The discussions that come from these seminars are really interesting.”

The next sessions are on 13 March – Migrating from hard-wired to programmable safety, 24 April – Functional Safety Simplified using PAScal and 22 May – Introduction to machinery safety. All sessions are held at Pilz’s purpose built offices on the Southern Gateway Business Park in Corby, they are free and kick off at 8am with a free breakfast at the Beefeater, running until midday.

The other machinery safety smart offering the company has is its larger Machinery Safety Alliance events that happen up and down the UK throughout the year. The MSA is made up of five companies; Pilz Automation Technology, Festo, Werma (all of whom are based in the local region) Fortress Interlocks and Troax.

The Machinery Safety Alliance was formed in early 2012 as a non-profit organisation with the stated mission “to make sense of safety, to safeguard productivity” via its website and educational seminars.

The seminars are held in exciting venues of engineering interest such as the Leicester National Space Centre, the venue for the next seminar, being held on 11 March. Each member contributes specialised knowledge from their field of technology and expertise, to provide attendees with an all-encompassing, state-of-the-art view of machinery safety at the regional seminar events.

Founder of the group, David Collier said: “Overall, machine safety is not rocket science; it’s about preventing people getting hurt by machines at work. The complicated part comes when safety functions have to be designed, verified and validated – which we seek to demystify during our seminars – but on the whole our aim is to address the wide range of issues, standards and technologies relevant to machine safety. Safety really can improve productivity as well as protect people, and we hope that our pragmatic approach offers some guidance to achieving both without becoming a sales pitch.”

The seminars contain presentations from the Machinery Safety Alliance members, and the Principal Specialist Inspector of the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE). There is a break-out exhibition at which there is the opportunity to “ask the experts” with an after lunch Q&A session.

Tickets for the next seminar cost £80 and can be purchased through the MSA website www.machinery-safety-alliance.co.uk
