Providing the legal input

RESPECTED local solicitor, John Punni, was invited to speak at the recent Commercial Developers Conference, held at the prestigious Mercedes Benz World in Weybridge, Surrey.

The conference, aimed at both experienced and novice property developers, brought together highly experienced and knowledgeable speakers. As well as legal input from John, the speakers included planners, lenders, brokers, accountants, tax advisers and property agents. The delegates, therefore, gained a wide overview of the latest trends, challenges, emerging opportunities, and innovative approaches that successful professional property developers are adopting.

John, a founding partner and head of the Commercial Property Team at Friday Legal Solicitors in Corby, spoke about common legal pitfalls that beset property development projects, and how to avoid them.

John’s presentation was well received and followed by many questions from delegates keen to tap into John’s extensive experience of property development matters.

The conference was organised by EquaGroup, who are well respected and successful property developers, mainly focusing on converting unused commercial and office buildings into much needed residential flats. In addition, EquaGroup provide mentoring, training and support to other developers.

Mark Stokes, director at EquaGroup, said: “We were honoured to have John talk on our platform. He has a wealth of legal knowledge and provided many useful tips and advice for the developers attending our conference”.

John said: “Property development is something that I am passionate about and it is not hard for me to talk about the subject with like-minded people. However, I am always surprised how some individuals only see the projected profit and fail to take account of the real risk or fail to carry out basic checks to mitigate development risk.”

John acts for a variety of developers, both in the commercial and residential sector. As well as dealing with sales and purchases, he regularly deals with land assembly transactions, acquisitions, overage provisions, joint venture agreements and land promotion agreements. He also has a wealth of experience and expertise in dealing with the financing of development land.

John is able to assist developers over the entire lifecycle of a development project, from acquiring the site, obtaining financing, and negotiating and entering into any deeds or agreements needed to facilitate the project, to dealing with plot sales to the end buyers.
