Keeping up with changes

Jeanette Cuccia, Operations Manager at RRE Electrical looks at new regulations that bring more changes to the electrical industry.

THE new 18th Edition Regulation for the electrical industry were released on 1 July. As with all regulation changes, there is always a period of change where everyone is getting familiar with the new guidelines.

These regulations were updated to reflect changes in technology, and in our society, such as the events that unfolded at Shirley Towers in 2013 when two firemen were killed as a result of falling cables. This is to make our industry safer for the user and for the emergency services. The changes made this year include ensuring that all cables are secured with metal clips, or in metal containment, so that the cable cannot fall on the fire service men and women during a rescue.

As an industry, we are used to constant changes and updates, and there have been many over the years. Remember the time before RCDs were introduced?

With changes to technology, comes changes to the way that machines are controlled. From push buttons and the clicks of a control panel, to the new modern PLC controlled panels. In order to advance alongside the changes, we, as a company, invest in our engineers and in keeping their skills up to date with the latest technology and new regulations.

However, not all things change. RRE Electrical Services have been changing bearings and rewinding electric motors since 1980. This has not changed at all. The process that is used to rewind an electric motor is still the same today as it was back then. Because the cost of an off-the-shelf new motor is often less that the repair, there is not much call for rewinding motors now. However, there are those occasions when there is a long lead-time, or when the motor is special, when the customer needs the motor to keep the machines running. On those occasions, the good ‘old-fashioned’ skills are needed. As we always have been, we are still able to offer these services.

Another good ‘old-fashioned’ thing that should never change is customer service. At RRE Electrical Services, we believe in offering our customers the personalised service that they require, whether it be using the latest technology, or our time-honoured skills.
