Specialist timber firm embraces growth

SCOTTS of Thrapston is making sure 2019 is a year of progression, growth and improvement as it looks ahead to marking its centenary by laying the foundations for a strong future.

Established in 1920, the family business has built a proud reputation for being a master of timber, and is renowned for its specialist products, including summerhouses, stables, garages, car barns, pavilions, roof trusses, engineered flooring, luxury doors, windows, bespoke joinery and education buildings.

The company has successfully exhibited at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for decades and this year was no exception, with the company making a major announcement during the iconic flower show.

Scotts is now the only manufacturer in the UK to produce an entire standard range of traditional hardwood summerhouses after having listened to customers’ demands for sustainable materials with high life expectancy. Scotts is now using Red Grandis, a premium quality, functional hardwood for its summerhouse range.

Chairman David Scott, whose son James is Managing Director, said: “We believe Red Grandis is set to become the hardwood of the future as it is so versatile, stable and high-performing.

“Red Grandis has many benefits, including great durability, is fungi and insect resistant and easy to maintain. It is also more dimensionally stable and free of knots.

“Customers are increasingly demanding sustainable materials and our new hardwood summerhouses will meet this demand as we offer garden buildings that can be passed on to the next generation.”

Last year saw major investment in equipment to increase orders and improve productivity with the installation of a new CNC Router. This year the company, which has also undertaken a major refurbishment of its Thrapston offices, is reaping the dividends of that investment with new product launches.

Scotts was delighted when its new casement and sash windows, aimed specifically at the new-build market, were given third party accreditation with Part Q Compliance. The window range has been created to be traditional in style while fully complying with all current building regulations.

The new sash window design includes click fit staff and parting bead, for ease of handling, installation and future maintenance. The windows have been tested, approved and third party certified for performance and security.

David said: “A company must always invest to match demand and its competition and we are future proofing the business for our employees so we can trade for another 100 years.

“We were delighted to gain Part Q accreditation and have other new products on the horizon, so these are exciting times. The timber engineering side of the business is doing well, with the roof truss division exceptionally busy as the housing market and demand for new build properties remains buoyant.

“Our attendance at RHS Chelsea Flower Show and RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival was once again very successful and we believe the decision to produce a range of hardwood summerhouses is forward-thinking.

“We have always believed in listening carefully to our customers and, through meeting their demands, we have remained at the forefront of our industry.

“We are looking forward to seeing the other side of Brexit and for the economic uncertainty to subside, but our order books remain strong as we continue to consolidate and grow.”
