Club’s important role in the business community

HOUSED in a beautiful, historic Grade II listed building, the Northampton and County Club has played a long and prominent role in the local business community.

Dating back to 1873, the club retains its position in business and social circles, hosting anything from networking breakfasts to working lunches and business dinners, as well as private parties and charity events.

Membership of what was once a Gentlemen’s Club is now open to both men and women and non-members may hire the beautiful premises for functions or dinner parties. The club is always keen to encourage new membership and has introduced a new offer of half price membership for the first year.

At the heart of the club, on George Row, opposite All Saints Church, is the elegant, Regency-style dining room which offers superb cuisine with an imaginative range of dishes prepared from high-quality fresh ingredients. The dining room seats 60-plus in comfortable surroundings. The Front of House Manager and Chef are on hand to discuss menu requirements with those looking to make private bookings. The dining room is open Tuesday to Saturday and is available from 11am to 3pm and in the evenings by prior arrangement.

There is a Members’ Bar, a delightful award-winning garden and a private car park. George’s Coffee Shop is now housed within the Fountain Room and is open to the public, Tuesday to Saturday 8am to 4pm offering a superb full breakfast and lunch menu, morning coffees, and afternoon tea. It also holds a monthly quiz that non-members are more than welcome to come along and enjoy as individuals or as teams. At present, on these evenings there is also a two-course meal and coffee.

A fine billiards and snooker room with three full size Burroughs and Watts snooker tables and an adjoining bar is situated on the first floor alongside two smaller but equally impressive rooms, which are available for hire, the Oak Hall and the Reading Room. The club organises snooker and billiards competitions and the more relaxed Pot Black evenings are a regular feature.

When the weather is kind, the award-winning garden with fountain, tables and chairs provides a peaceful retreat from the busy town to dine al fresco. The private members’ car park at the rear of the club is approached directly from Angel Street.

Northampton and County Club Chairman Jim Shuttlewood said: “We have a long history of tradition and formality, but the club today is an important part of the modern-day business community of Northampton, from black tie events to relaxed social occasions.”

“We are always happy to welcome new members, but non-members are welcome to hire the facilities and our team are always on hand to discuss guests’ requirements.”
