Spring clean your business

AS the economy improves and most businesses are moving into a phase of expansion, there is less time to work on your business as the pressures of dealing with suppliers and customers increase.

However, some areas of your business not to neglect are likely to be:-

* Your Data Protection Act compliance. Are you registered with the Data Protection Commission? If not, are you happy that you do not need to be? Non-compliance is treated very seriously. The Data Protection Commissioner seems to have a policy of levying heavy fines in order to get publicity.

* Your website.

* Your website. Who owns the rights to its design?  If it has been created by a third party contractor, unless they have assigned the copyright in it to you, they will own the copyright. This could make it difficult to use someone else to make changes to it.

* Your terms and conditions of sale and purchase. How long since they have been checked for compliance within current legislation. Probably most of your contracts with suppliers and customers are made electronically. Are your terms and conditions in a fit state to be used for e-commerce?

The above areas are all very basic ones to look at and should not take much time to review and if necessary to update.  However, in the excitement of seeing your business expand, if you neglect them it will cost you a lot of time to put right and could involve a significant expense in terms of a regulatory fine, or a dispute with a customer or supplier.
