Work starts on innovation centre

WORK begins in autumn 2017 on the exciting new Food and Drink Innovation Centre at Moulton College that is due to open in September 2018.

The centre will provide opportunities for current and prospective students and to meet the skills development needs of the food and drink sector across Northamptonshire and neighbouring counties. Moulton College will be able to offer a suite of Higher and Degree Apprenticeships and standalone degrees in Food Science and Technology to meet the higher level needs of the industry.

The centre’s facilities will include a food technology teaching facility, fully equipped with the most up-to-date technology. It will also include a large conference room, a sensory room to test products and even a micro-brewery.

With local food companies being able to use the laboratory facilities, students will be able to gain hands-on experience within the industry. Young people will be able to train to become food engineers food scientists and technologists.

With the ongoing need for more skilled specialist staff it’s more important than ever to ensure that young people are gaining the right skills in food and drink to be able to further develop the industry in the UK.

Principal, Stephen Davies said: “I’m very excited that Moulton College will have the chance to develop young people within Northamptonshire to move forward into the food and drink industry. There was clearly a need to have food and drink manufacturing training in the county and we’re pleased to be able to provide this.”

The project is set to see over 40 construction jobs being supported through the build process, further supporting local industry. It will also contribute over £15 million to the local economy by 2021, providing over 300 qualifications each year.

Moulton College will be providing updates of the build and the developments of the courses via social media and the website www.moulton.ac.uk
