HEADED up by its award-winning managing director Lara Ayris, Waste Plan Solutions has built an excellent reputation for assisting clients minimise waste and in so doing save thousands of pounds each year.

Lara, who was named the Outstanding Woman in Construction in 2012, has recently been joined at the company’s helm by new Chairman Hugh Parnell.

Hugh brings experience of working in finance and business development for BP and in international corporate finance and now advises a range of businesses on how to reach sustainable scale, and his appointment has been born out of the announcement of a grant from Innovate UK to WPS to part fund a £800,000 project.

WPS was originally founded to assist the construction industry to comply with a bewildering array of environmental legislation and planning conditions.

Services range from Site Waste Management Plans to the Considerate Constructor’s Scheme package, which is designed to help clients achieve their waste targets.

In addition, WPS offers waste services including permit applications, permit variations and fire prevention plans, and through its training and consultancy arm, delivers flexible waste consultancy and training programmes to meet a wide variety of requirements.

In an increasingly complex system, firms have a duty of care obligation that covers such areas as classifying waste, registering premises, storing and moving waste, and understanding permits and exemptions.

Lara Ayris said: “It’s important that those in the construction industry understand their responsibilities in what is a complex area, and we support site managers in ensuring compliance, making sure paperwork is in order and that waste is disposed of in line with legislation.

“Our services reduce construction site waste by as much as 1,000 tonnes each year, saving clients approximately £1million in total.”

In one case study, at Myddleton Lodge, WPS was retained to provide consultancy services to support achievement of the BREEAM excellent target, the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) target of 40-plus points and to meet corporate social responsibility targets. Through a range of measures, WPS helped satisfy all planning conditions, assisted the project in being well on target for BREEAM excellent standard, and achieved a score of 42 points in the first CCS inspection.
