Getting ready for changes to minimum wage

THE New Year brings a great expectation that businesses will change how they recruit in line with another big development in employment regulation.

April 2016 sees the formal introduction of the Living Wage, designed to ensure that workers earn enough to afford a normal standard of living, which it is argued the National Minimum Wage fails to do. The expectation for many businesses is that this will be hugely costly and force a change to existing business models.

Paul Hooper from Impact Recruitment Services said: “We have long listened to the debates around the Minimum Wage and the Living Wage, so that when changes happen we are ready to advise our clients on how to efficiently implement. Our approach is to work with clients to review their whole workforce strategy and consider all implementation options. We look at things like role responsibilities, productivity of workers and mix of temporary and permanent workers. These reviews can prove to be hugely beneficial, revealing other opportunities to optimise costs and performance.”

Key things to know about the Living Wage

* From April 2016 the Living Wage will be £7.20, replacing the £6.50 National Minimum Wage.

* The Living Wage will rise to £9 an hour by 2020.

* It will only apply to the over-25s; six million people are set to benefit.

* Mitigating changes include a cut in Corporation Tax of two per cent and reduced employee National Insurance Contributions.

Impact Recruitment Services are ready for the change and are already busy working with clients on tailored implementation strategies.
