Life easier for green motorists

THE growing network of electric vehicle chargers is making life even easier for motorists who are keen to take advantage of the latest hi-tech mode of transport.

Now Northampton-based contractors Thorn Electrical is hoping more businesses and other organisations will recognise the potential of installing electric charger systems.

Chris Thorneycroft, who founded the business in 2004, explained: “The growing network is making life easier to locate a charger system, which is good news for drivers but we believe many businesses still need to recognise the opportunities.”

Currently, the UK electric vehicle market is growing faster than anticipated. A further £37 million is being set aside for infrastructure, which is good news for owners who have struggled in the past to find somewhere to charge up their vehicle.

In Corby, there has been rapid growth of the systems that enable motorists to recharge the vehicle’s battery, but other parts of the county are lagging behind.

Chris said: “Electric Corby is really making an impact on the area, with businesses in the town recognising the value of running electric and hybrid electric vehicles. It would be good to see other parts of Northamptonshire now following suit and looking at the options.”

The development of electric powered vehicles has come a long way in just a few years with major investment from leading manufacturers like Toyota, BMW, Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall.

Northamptonshire County Council has embraced the technology with Thorn Electrical undertaking a contract that included the installation of charging points at Prince William School in Oundle, County Hall and Rushden Community College.

Chris said: “The county council is taking a lead in this developing technology and we now hope that businesses looking for ways to become more competitive and support environmentally friendly initiatives will recognise the benefits.

“We are keen to discuss options with businesses who may be considering updating their fleet or larger companies who simply want to support employees who run their own electric-powered vehicles. There are real opportunities for businesses who want to be part of this pioneering transport technology.”

The contractors work across the region with clients from the private and public sector, including education and healthcare, who may simply want advice on a simple installation or need to discuss a more challenging project. The team is well equipped, with all Thorn Electrical’s quality installations backed by the company’s status as a registered contractor by NICEIC, the independent body for electrical installation matters in the UK.

The business offers a complete scope of an electrical installation from design of supply and lighting systems through the installation process, to the testing and certification of a building and its system or regular testing of appliances to meet current regulations.

Chris said: “We pride ourselves on our versatility and high standards. We use state-of-the-art technology and apply creative insight and take environmental implications into account to deliver all our projects.”
