BARRATT Homes has welcomed a customer who bought a home from the developer last year as a new recruit onto its Armed Forces Acceleration Programme.
John Mathis, who lives at the Lake View development in Corby, was delighted to be accepted onto the unique scheme following his departure from the Army.
He is currently training at the site he lives on, meaning his commute to work is just a short walk away and will soon be moving to Lyveden Fields in Wellingborough.
Working as a Royal Engineer in the forces meant he was able to transfer many of his previous skills to his new role, including leadership and management as well as communication and organisation. He also brought with him some experience of bricklaying and other trades which were related to his previous role.
John said: "I was so happy to be accepted onto this programme because I knew with my previous experience Site Management could be a good career for me.
"As I live in a Barratt home, I knew the brand and knew it was a reputable housebuilder. But now I've seen the work that goes into building one of their properties I can really appreciate the time and effort that is put into each home.
"I've been shadowing the Site Manager at Lake View, Darren Price, and it's great to see that he and his team all strive for perfection with each property and quality is at the top of the list of priorities.
"This scheme is a great opportunity for ex-forces people because it gives us the chance to pursue a new career at trainee management level and I have already learnt so much being here."
His appointment comes as part of Barratt Homes' commitment to helping ex-servicemen and women into new employment through an Armed Forces Covenant.
The programme is accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and takes 12 months to complete through a combination of classroom-based training and on-the-job experience.
The training scheme is designed to lead to an appointment as a fully qualified Assistant Site Manager within 12 months.
Andrew Swindell, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Northampton, said: "We are delighted to welcome John to the team and wish him all the best on the Armed Forces Acceleration Programme.
"The programme is extremely important in giving career opportunities to Ex-Armed Forces personnel. The skills and past experiences that they hold provide them with a great foundation to help them become excellent site managers.
"The work of an Assistant Site Manager is fast paced and well-suited to Armed Forces personnel looking for a new challenge and a career in construction. We're always on the lookout for potential employees like John who can show strong leadership skills and have the ability to problem solve and work under pressure."
John hopes to continue working for Barratt Homes and gain the relevant housebuilder experience he needs in order to become a Site Manager. He is taking inspiration from Site Manager Darren and also strives to win Pride in the Job awards.
