One resolution you should make

EVERY year, as 1 January arrives, many of us begin to think how we can make the year ahead an even better one using the New Year as a time to take stock and start making plans for the future. As part of this it is also a great time to take a fresh look at the skills within your workforce to deliver business objectives and plan for future success – this is where Evolve Business Training at Tresham College of Further and Higher Education can help!

Grow your own!

The first step in any up-skilling strategy is to undertake a review of the skills base of your existing workforce.

The first step in any up-skilling strategy is to undertake a review of the skills base of your existing workforce. This can be done either in-house or with the co-operation of a local training provider such as Evolve Business Training.

This involves taking each job role and setting levels of competence for the key skills needed to undertake the job. This could include technical skills, IT competence and even team leadership and management skills. This can then be compared against the skill level of the person in the role and gaps identified.

Next steps

Once the gaps have been identified there are various routes that can be taken to up-skill your existing workforce and funding might also be available to support your development plans. You could look at mentoring schemes, encouraging a more formal approach to the training of younger / more in-experienced staff by those within the team that can train them further.

Another route is up-skilling via apprenticeship schemes. These programmes are not just for new recruits. With funding available for anyone who has not already studied at degree level and with flexible work based programmes available to minimise any disruption to the business they can make both practical and financial sense to the challenge of upgrading your skill base.

Need someone new?

If, after completing the training needs analysis, it becomes clear that you need to increase your workforce then again an apprenticeship programme could deliver the skills and expertise that you need. Local training providers such as Evolve can also help with the recruitment of new apprentices and help you to explore the funding available to train your new team member.

So, when all the other resolutions have fallen by the wayside make sure that you have a robust skills development plan, based on the needs of your business both now and in the future.
