Austin Investigations are already working with businesses who are looking to resolve these issues.

The Northamptonshire-based team reveals that The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners estimates that a typical business will lose an average of six per cent of revenues through employee theft and fraud. The research indicates that small businesses suffer disproportionate losses because of limited resources they have available to tackle this problem.

In a recent article from the Oxford University Press the increasing problem of malingering and illness deception found that one out of three workers said it was acceptable for an employee to stay off work and receive benefits because they felt pain even though their doctor said they were well enough to return to work. The same research found that seven out of 10 workers believe that compensation fraud is a widespread problem and 45 per cent say fraud is on the increase.

An article in Occupational Health starts with the statement: “Government assessments of people’s fitness to work have revealed what occupational health practitioners have known for a long time: a minority of individuals that are on sickness leave are only pretending to be ill.”

The article highlights that some organisations routinely engage private investigators where industrial injury claims have been made. In 80 per cent of the cases investigated the claimant had no injury or was exaggerating the impact of an injury for the purposes of their personal injury claim. Typically, claims of around £350,000, based on clinical findings as well as self-reported symptoms, were mitigated down to £20,000 through proving illness deception.

A spokesman for Austin Investigations said: “In today’s competitive business world can your business ignore such a drain on revenues. We are an established private investigation company staffed by retired police officers, providing a discrete, lawful, ethical and confidential service, who operate with integrity in a professional manner. We provide evidence for use in courts for tribunals, criminal and civil cases.”
