YOUNG minds were left inspired by the achievement of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team as they took a victory lap of Brackley.

In December, around 30 members of the Mercedes team boarded an open-top bus at their headquarters on Reynard Park and set off on a two-hour tour of six Brackley schools. They were greeted by excited crowds of young people, who waved flags and cheered the team before being presented with special postcards to mark the occasion.

The team had time to get off the bus and talk to the children, and many spent time signing autographs including Executive Director (Technical) Paddy Lowe.

Mr Lowe said: “It’s been a fantastic morning and I would like to thank everyone involved in putting this together. In particular, we wanted to meet the children at the local primary schools and were all overwhelmed by the amazing welcome they gave us.

“It was also interesting to meet and talk to some of the students from Silverstone UTC. It is important to us that we may be able to inspire the workforce of the future in a small way. We are also very honoured to have been given such a warm welcome by the Mayor of Brackley and other representatives of the local community.”

At the end of the tour the bus pulled onto the High Street and made its way to the Town Hall where supporters had gathered alongside students from the Silverstone UTC. As with the 2009 Brawn GP victory celebration, the drivers were unable to attend due to their schedules, but Lewis Hamilton’s championship-winning car was on display along with the F1 World Championship Constructors’ Trophy.
