Safeguarding conference

HIGHLY-respected specialists will be sharing their thoughts at a conference which is being hosted by the Elderly and Vulnerable Client Unit of leading regional law firm Tollers.

The theme Empowerment of the Individual is looking to build on the success of last year’s conference which looked at safeguarding and redress issues. This year’s event, on Thursday, 10 March, will once again bring together representatives from charities, local authorities, other legal firms and companies.

This year’s conference will highlight several areas relating to empowerment and how judges and professionals have to balance the views and empower individuals while safeguarding and protecting them from physical and financial abuse.

Tollers are delighted that eminent Senior Judge, Denzil Lush of the Court of Protection will be speaking at the conference. He will reflect on some of his own judgements and talk about the views of the court system when dealing with empowerment, participation and the wishes, feelings and beliefs of individuals.

Martin Kingerely, Barrister from 36 Bedford Row Chambers, will talk on welfare decision making, including DOLS applications and the rights of an individual in law.

Sally Jones, Head of Legal from The Office of The Public Guardian (OPG), will discuss the authority’s role in the empowerment of early decision making through Lasting Power of Attorneys and the impact of guidance and restrictions.

There will also be other speakers from Tollers at the conference which will be held at Northampton’s Hilton Hotel in Watering Lane. These will include consent to medical treatment, how to raise complaints and safeguarding, the role of the Panel Deputy and making best interest decisions and legal solutions when Financial Powers of Attorney go wrong.

Karon Walton, Head of the Elderly and Vulnerable Client Unit, said: “It is vital that we continue to highlight these important issues and give individuals working in these fields access to experts. Tollers are delighted to again be hosting a conference that gives professionals working with the elderly and vulnerable an opportunity to explore and discuss the issues arising in this ever changing area of law.”
