HIGHLY sought after in 11 stores across the UK and by customers all over the world, Cheaney Shoes is still at the heart of the local business community, with a manufacturing base and factory shop right here in Northamptonshire.
The Desborough-based business produces premium brand footwear for its stand-alone stores – eight in London as well as premises in Cambridge and Leeds – but it is its factory shop that gives Northamptonshire customers the chance to view and purchase the acclaimed range close to home and at a reduced retail price.
Joint Managing Directors and fifth generation shoemakers Jonathan and William Church are proud of the family business that has adapted to remain strong over years that have seen a steep decline in the number and range of shoes produced in the county.
The Cheaney success story, dating back to over 130 years, is founded on keeping the traditional Northamptonshire shoe-making skills alive and forging ahead in a market where quality British craftsmanship is still valued throughout the world.
Jonathan states: “We are proud that the entire manufacturing process, from the cutting of the leather through to the final polish of the completed shoe, takes place in our Desborough factory. There are over 120 skilled people employed, handcrafting shoes to the highest standards.
“We see manufacturing everything under one roof as a major advantage for us. Not only are we able to ensure that every pair of shoes is made to the highest standards, but it also gives us the agility to react quickly.”
Cheaney Shoes was presented with the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2016, demonstrating how quality products made in England are recognised the world over. Their footwear is exported to Japan (the firm’s second biggest market), the USA, Europe, the United Arab Emirates and Russia.
This season’s range for men and women has its theme as the British Safari, with earthy colours and lightweight soles – the perfect alternative to the tried and tested classics.
