Leading the way for healthy business growth

ALTHOUGH employees are often considered the most important asset to any business, not many employers actually invest time or money in ensuring their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

However, an innovative accountancy practice with offices in Northampton and Market Harborough are breaking the mould by introducing a series of health and wellbeing initiatives as they know the importance of a happy and healthy team.

Elsby & Co Chartered Accountants (www.elsbyandco.co.uk) have been working with Health4Prosperity (www.health4prosperity.co.uk), also based in Northamptonshire, to develop a customised health and wellbeing programme.  Rachel Helmn, founder of Health4Prosperity and her experienced team devised the programme based on the business needs of Elsby & Co, their working environment and the profile of their workforce to deliver a truly personal approach.

It was founding partner Carl Elsby’s search to reward his team for a successful year with something that would have lasting benefits for them and the business that led him to enlist the help of Health4Prosperity.

The programme included a wellbeing masterclass, delivered by an inspirational speaker, as well as nutritional consultations, providing staff with information and advice on healthy eating and lifestyle changes. Other sessions included spinal health checks and ergonomic assessments.

Happy to share his experience, Carl admitted that he had been flagging in the afternoons but following a change of diet his productivity has increased significantly. The results have far exceeded his expectations.

“I see this service in a completely different light now,” he said. “It is not only good for the soul; it is a good business investment. We invest in machines, premises, etc but do we invest enough in creating the best possible environment in which our staff (our greatest asset) can flourish?”

The results of the programme speaks volumes, with 100 per cent of the team surveyed at Elsby & Co taking benefit from the sessions, 70 per cent noticed improvement in posture following the spinal health checks and 87 per cent said they made changes to their health and wellbeing as a result of the programme. Not only have the staff experienced benefit to their health but also they can see how highly they are valued by the senior management team, creating a stronger bond between them.

In launching Health4Prosperity Rachel’s hopes to help employers keep their staff happy and healthy in the first instance and in return reduce their absences, decrease their stress and increase their motivation and productivity.

With a reported loss of £32 billion in the UK through absenteeism at work it is no wonder that companies are keen to tackle this problem. The knock-on effect of absent staff can be felt particularly strongly by SMEs as it impacts the workload and morale of the rest of the team. As companies adopt Absence Management Programmes designed to discourage sick days through the threat of consequences to their employment; Health4Prosperity delivers a positive and supportive way to address the issue.

“The principle that prevention is better than cure is often not applied to the work environment but it costs far less to prevent ill health than the cost of dealing with lower productivity and continued sickness and absence,” explained Rachel. “Our services support employees to change their thinking and behaviour towards improving their own health and wellbeing and provides the knowledge, tools and motivation for achieving this goal.”

Health4Prosperity is giving one lucky business the opportunity to benefit from their services for free by giving away a Corporate Wellbeing Session. The session is perfect for any local business that puts people at the heart of their business. To enter the draw email with your name, job title and company name. The closing date for entries is the 31 July 2014. Please e-mail for full terms and conditions.
