5G: The future of mobile connectivity

YOU may remember a couple of months ago we looked at the Internet of Things and how this will effect business. The current figure of connected devices stands at around 15 billion, and by 2020 there are expected to be 50 billion. 5G is the technology that will allow this to take place.

5G will not only introduce faster speeds – for example, you will be able to download a full HD movie in around 10 seconds – but the bandwidth will be greater, meaning that the billions of devices that are connected to the IoT will be able to communicate with each other, for example, the Amazon Echo.

A huge implication at the moment is energy efficiency and, therefore, cost. 5G will be much more energy efficient in order for you to be able to make use of it without it draining the battery on devices, not only your mobile phone, but all the billions of devices connected to the network.

The introduction of the new network is going to change the way in which the world currently works. It will enable a fully mobile and connected society. Of course, the personal uses are great but it is the business users that will really make the most of this new technology.

Is your workforce currently mobile? Needing to be connected on the go? 5G is going to take this to the next level, with less downtime and higher productivity, no matter where you are. We’re already seeing the introduction of connected cars, wearables and drones, not to mention smart cities.

Although it is unlikely that we will be rolling out for a few more years, the time to prepare is now. By making sure you’re with a trusted partner and planning ahead, when the time comes the transition will be a whole lot easier.
