A quality space requires thought

MOST of us spend the majority of our waking hours in an office or doing work, and as technology continues to alter HOW we work, businesses are having to think more carefully about how THEY create office spaces that enhance workflows, inspire workforces, and accurately represent their brand.

First things first, be warned that moving straight to a completely open plan space is becoming old hat and could be a big mistake. In this year’s Gensler UK Workplace report the results showed that over 8 million UK employees work in open plan spaces, of which many are not optimally designed.

The trick is to adapt in stages to ensure you get it right.

After all, you have to consider the needs of ALL people in your organisation, not just those that make their needs known. Take time to analyse the style of workspaces that your employees NEED to get the job done but also consider what they might WANT. Need & want are two different things but a balance between the two can generate great results.

So, if one big open space is not necessarily the answer to innovation and collaboration, what do I do you ask?

Businesses are now responsible for creating environments where employees have choice in how and where they work but they equally must remember that one person’s nightmare could be another’s white noise. Areas for collaborative work, impromptu meetings, moments of solace, or just a break from permanent workspaces all need to be considered when designing your office space. Variety breaks down communication barriers and will encourage innovation and spontaneity within your office. Obviously, the type of business you run depends on how flexible you can be with these spaces.

Then there is how modern office furniture integrates with technology. Wireless charging points on desks, audio visual equipment in collaborative furniture, and wireless connectivity are just some of the things that will maximise the productivity of your workforce. Which brings us on to office furniture. Whatever you do, don’t skimp. Quality furniture should be seen as an important investment for your business as it will keep your employees comfortable and in turn, enhance their wellbeing. Ergonomic chairs and desk systems that hide cable spaghetti are a great place to start in creating a comfortable workplace.

Now if you have recently refurbished your office and have noticed that some employees don’t seem to be settling in too well, don’t panic. Getting your workplace spot on is a constant journey. Keep modifying and adapting the spaces. Try new methods of work to see what sticks and listen to your employees if they have feedback. After all, they are your most valuable asset.

Talking to your employees can be a huge reminder of what makes your business what it is. It is important not to recreate what somebody else has done as it won’t be true to your business culture. Take a close look at the values of your business and the needs of your employees and build on your concept from there. This process can be surprisingly cathartic!

Above all, whether you are moving into a new location, refurbishing your existing office, or expanding into additional premises, VISION is the key. Having a confident sense of what your employees need and the core values of your business will be what enables you to create the perfect workplace for your business.
