Ikea has been supplying local European authorities handling the refugee crisis with beds.  With hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers arriving across Europe, they are struggling to satisfy demand.

The innovative team who make the paper pallet known as Pallite® have developed a lightweight, wood free solution that can be assembled in less than three seconds!  All that needs to be added is the bedding.

David Rose, the sale director said “I originally heard the article on Radio 4 and wondered if there was something we could do.  I asked the guys in the factory and within an hour, they came up with a great solution!”

The bed itself weighs around 12kg and the team at Wellingborough can manufacture in excess of 5,000 beds per week.  “Made purely from paper and glue, they’re incredibly light so transportation costs are reduced and even airfreight becomes a viable delivery option if needed urgently”, commented Rose.

So far the Company has made initial contact with the German and Swedish Embassies as well as targeting the UK Government to support this great British initiative.

“At less than £20 per bed compared to £50-£60 for a normal foldaway version, it might even make the procurement teams sleep better at night!  It’s also kinder to the environment as it can be recycled after use.”
