MOULTON College’s annual awards ceremonies took place at the Holcot Centre in June to celebrate the exciting achievements and fantastic work that the students have produced over the last year.
As is traditional at the College’s prestigious event, principal Stephen Davies gave an inspiring talk, encouraging students to take pride in their achievements and to remember all the valuable lessons they have learned in their time at Moulton as well as giving a review of the college’s performance over the last year. This included further improvements in success rates, 88.3 per cent of 16 to 18 year old students achieved their vocational qualifications, comparing favourably to national rates. 96 per cent of leavers have gone on to further studies or into employment, this is a great success and reflects one of the college’s core values which is to develop the employability of students to prepare them for the world of work.
As well as this there has been a range of curriculum developments and a review of the college’s training work with employers. The first group of Higher Apprentices in Construction graduated this year, seeing all students securing permanent roles and/or promotion or progressing to study the BSc (Hons) Construction programme.
Award winners at the event were joined by college staff, parents, mayors, councillors, local employers and, most importantly, the students to celebrate their incredible hard work and to recognise outstanding contributions to courses and the College.
The event was attended by William Sitwell, Editor of Waitrose Food magazine and MasterChef critic; Charlene Withall, Community Engagement and Investment Manager at Keepmoat Group; Kelvin Thomas, Chairman at Northampton Town Football Club and Mark Harding, Chairman of Canine Hydrotherapy Association, who all gave guest speeches to students.
Over the past 12 months the college has used its capital investment to improve the college estate and facilities. The college has been working in partnership with Northampton Borough Council, and Northampton Rugby and Athletics Clubs to build and open the new UK Athletics Standard Athletics Track and associated facilities.
The college has established strong links with local and regional employers, local authorities, and the Local Enterprise Partnership. Mr Davies mentioned that this has been recognised with the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) awarding money from the Governments Local Growth Fund to create a Food and Drink Innovation Centre which will be completed by August 2018 offering further opportunities for students.
Mr Davies encouraged the students to take pride in their work, saying: “At Moulton College, young people and adults develop high standards of practical skills and a high proportion achieve their vocational qualifications; the majority progress into employment, further or higher education once they have completed their studies.
The annual presentation of awards and certificates to students who successfully complete apprenticeships and vocational qualifications at award, certificate and diploma level is the culmination of all their hard work and endeavour, supported by the exceptional professionalism, commitment and enthusiasm of all staff and governors.”
