Celebrating the best buildings

LEADING local building products manufacturer Forterra has been named as the official sponsor of a prestigious national prize awarded by British architects to the UK’s best new homes.

The Royal Institute for British Architects (RIBA) House of the Year Award 2018 highlights 20 exceptional houses and extensions from across the UK, from which a shortlist and finally a winner will be revealed later this year. The shortlisted homes will be described in detail in a Channel 4 TV series scheduled to be broadcast this autumn.

The diverse list of houses includes a former gin distillery transformed into a family home, a country cottage which was once a farm shed and two neighbouring houses in Newcastle built using local bricks, concrete and steel to reflect the area’s industrial heritage.

Forterra, which has its head offices in Northampton, is sponsoring the award for the first time in its 52-year history. The company makes half a billion bricks each year, along with a diverse selection of other products chiefly for the new homes and renovation industry.

Stephen Harrison, Chief Executive of Forterra said: “We are very proud to be sponsoring RIBA’s House of the Year Awards, which for more than 50 years has celebrated the best and most inspiring new houses to have been built in Britain.

Shropshire Residence, by Gregory Phillips Architects, is on the longlist of the RIBA House of the Year Awards.

“As one of the country’s leading manufacturers of building products, we work closely with architects and developers to supply the vital components necessary to make people’s dream homes and other projects a reality. We eagerly look forward to the announcement of the shortlist, and the final winner, of this celebrated industry event.”
