College launches new food and drink courses

THE new academic year at Moulton College has seen the launch of Food and Drink courses, as the college looks to develop the next generation of professional bakers, nutritionists and food scientists.

The courses have been launched in response to the growing demands of a thriving local food and drink industry across Northamptonshire and the South East Midlands. The state-of-the-art facilities at the college’s new Food and Drink Innovation Centre include a bakery, concept development kitchen, sensory room for testing and a micro-brewery.

Moulton College offers a range of full-time and part-time courses across the food and drink spectrum. Applications are open for the second intake of full-time courses for post-16 students starting in September 2019 in Professional Bakery, Food Technology and Food, Science and Nutrition, as well as a part-time Beginner’s Bakery evening course starting in February 2019.

Gerald Davies, Deputy Principal at Moulton College said: “It is wonderful to see the Food and Drink Innovation Centre open. With the build taking a year, and planning and development in place long before then, I’m pleased that so many students are already taking full advantage of the facilities to expand their knowledge.

“As a college we are keen that all our facilities are of the highest standard and replicate a true working environment as much as possible. Our technology lab and concept development kitchen will really stretch students and encourage them to learn the science behind food and drink production. This means that when they have finished their course they are in an ideal position not just to get employment, but to really thrive in the working world.”

Steve Russell, Bakery lecturer at Moulton College said: “Getting to teach in these brand new facilities is a real treat. Everything here is reflective of a true professional environment, meaning students and staff can only enter wearing the right equipment and having followed the correct hygienic procedures.

“Within a few weeks our bakery students have already been learning about key professional and commercial concepts and been in the kitchens baking various types of bread and pastries. I’m really looking forward to seeing them, and students across all our courses develop over the next weeks and months.”
