College students are on a roll

A GROUP of five Northampton College students are hoping to see their specially crafted new sandwich sold in Subway stores across the region.

First year business students Josh Russell, Paul Dalton, Liam Zdunczyk, Joe Watkin, and Reece Waterfield have teamed up to create the CertiSub, a new low-fat sub which has seen them reach the regional finals of a competition to create a new product for High Street fast food giant Subway.

The sub, which contains turkey, BBQ sauce, lettuce and cucumber, will go head-to-head with five other flavours created by students from across the Anglia region. The winning sub will be sold in stores for a two week period, with the winning students getting involved in a marketing campaign to promote the product.

Business lecturer Karin Keir-Bucknall said: “We are so proud that our students have been shortlisted as finalists in the challenge. The team have worked really hard to create their sub and it has been a great opportunity for them to put their business skills to the test.”

The five-strong team fought off competition from more than 100 rivals to reach the regional final and will now present their sub and full marketing plan at a Dragons Den style pitch event to a panel of Subway franchisees and marketing executives.

Josh Russell, aged 16, said: “We wanted to create a sub for people in their late teens to early 20s who want to eat healthily and are aware of the dangers of too much fat in their diet. We have chosen low calorie ingredients but tried to keep it as tasty as possible.

“It’s called the CertiSub to tie in with our social media campaign. Well known accounts on Twitter and Instagram get a “certified’ tick to show they are genuine and want this to come across in our sub to show that it’s certified healthy.”

The students have been given a fictional £20,000 budget to advertise their brainchild and the students have devised a strategic marketing plan which includes online, print and broadcast advertising as well as targeting their specific audience using a mix of social media channels.

The team will present to the Subway panel on November 17 and if they win could land up to £1,000 in Amazon vouchers and the chance to see their sub become a reality in stores across the region.
