Contractors mark 10th

Thorn Electrical has come a long way in ten years.

Now it has an enviable reputation in the industry after completing a wide range of contracts across different sectors but a decade ago it literally was one man, a van and a supportive wife.

Chris Thorneycroft, who has grown the Northampton-based electrical contractors with his wife Michala, clearly remembers one of the company’s first commissions – a Mr and Mrs Stockton.

The team still undertakes work for domestic customers but their order book also has a growing number of projects demanding a lot more than rewiring a light fitting.

Chris, who learned the trade in the Royal Navy followed by 13 years at Hortech TBS, said: “We took the decision to set up a business but we knew it would take time but have always been happy to grow steadily.”

This decision means each year the business has been able to build on stable foundations and take on fresh opportunities.

The company has an ever-expanding team including fully qualified electricians Lee Gilbert and Scott Knowles, who was the company’s first apprentice. Since then the business has supported other youngsters including its current apprentice Jack Waterhouse and Improver Ben Knowles. Alexandra McDonald is clerical assistant in the office and with a family full of budding entrepreneurs there is no expected shortfall in the future.

The couple value the opportunity of nurturing fresh talent and having a team who share their professional approach to work.

Their client list includes many who demand contractors meet additional criteria. Recent projects have included installing electric vehicle charging systems and undertaking installations at St Andrew’s Healthcare in their locations at Northampton, Essex, Nottinghamshire and Birmingham.

Chris said: “We know there are other electrical contractors who can undertake the same type of work as us but we always believe in working with our clients and going the extra mile. Our team are CRB-checked and we can trust them to maintain our high standards.

“It is good when we hear from clients about how our teams have undertaken the job. We respect our clients who appreciate that we don’t have to be asked to wear covers on shoes and clear up at the end of the day. It is about being professional.

“We pride ourselves on our versatility and high standards. We use state-of-the-art technology and apply creative insight and take environmental implications into account to deliver all our projects.

“We are proud of our business and would like to thank everyone for the support and the opportunities during the last ten years and look forward to taking on fresh projects in the coming years.”

Thorn Electrical offers a complete scope of electrical installation from design and supply of lighting systems through the installation process, to the testing and certification of a building and its system or regular testing of appliances to meet current regulations.

The contractors work across the region with clients from the private and public sector, including education and healthcare, who may simply want advice on a simple installation or need to discuss a more challenging project.

The team is well equipped, with all Thorn Electrical’s quality installations backed by the company’s status as a registered contractor by NICEIC, the independent body for electrical installation matters in the UK.

The business is also certified as a professional and trusted supplier by Constructionline, the UK’s largest pre-qualification certification scheme, owned by the Government. To become a certified member Thorn Electrical Ltd had to demonstrate that it met Constructionline’s rigorous pre-qualification (PQQ) criteria.

Constructionline assesses a wide range of information during the certification process, from professional conduct, financial information, proof of insurances, previous experience and references. This process ensures Constructionline’s 8,000 registered buyers, from both public and private sector organisations, can rest assured that suppliers registered with Constructionline are ‘fit-to-supply’.

The team also has fully CRB enhanced clearance and Acclaim Health and Safety to recognise its excellent Health and Safety policies and procedures.
