Encouraging the youngsters

LOOKING to encourage the next generation, Wellingborough Golf Club is providing an excellent opportunity for young golfers to develop their love of the game.

Junior Membership is now just £75 per year, allowing access not just to the course but also to junior coaching facilities at the club.

Regular coaching sessions are held by the club’s PGA Assistant Professional James Whittemore, at a cost of £20 per child for four one-hour weekly sessions.

Coaching covers all aspects of the game from driving and putting to the rules of golf. It is the perfect way for a child to improve and learn all about the game, while all sessions are designed to be fun and safe for all involved.

Coaching develops not only golf skills but fundamental movement skills to help children with other sports and is a healthy outdoor activity to do during school holidays and at weekends.

It also gives young people the chance to meet new friends outside of school and develop social skills with players of all age groups.

Junior Sunday afternoon Stableford nine-hole competitions are run fortnightly from the beginning of April until the end of June culminating in the Top Four order of merit placing competing for the Charter Cup on 21 June.

Wellingborough Juniors also enter a team into the Northants County order of merit inter-club competitions and the club is keen to make the finals this year. The format is matchplay and a team of four juniors is selected to represent the club.

There’s also a Ryder Cup Junior Competition annually where adult men and women golfers join with the juniors to play greensomes over 18 holes.

Both the club’s A & B teams have agreed this year to play matches with juniors, giving everyone the opportunity to have fun and enjoy a competitive challenge.
