Excited to lead the next generation

GSSArchitecture is celebrating its 140th anniversary as an architectural practice throughout 2019. This month, Managing Partner Ian Bray takes the opportunity to reflect on his time at the practice since he joined 26 years ago.

HAVING attended primary and secondary school in Corby, I carried on to Tresham College, where I gained an ONC in Building Studies, whilst working for a small quantity surveying practice in Corby.

After being made redundant during the early 1990s, I was keen to carry on my studies on a part-time basis whilst working in Northamptonshire. When the opportunity arose at GSS it was the perfect fit, a business that was keen to grow and give me the opportunity to undertake a part-time degree and support me through the RICS APC.

I am now coming to the end of my first year as Managing Partner, having started as a trainee 26 years ago. I became Chartered in 1999 and was promoted to Associate Partner by the age of 28, before becoming a partner in 2006. I am proud and honoured to work for such a long-established and respected business, and fully appreciate the opportunities that GSS has presented me over the years.

As Managing Partner, I currently spend the majority of my time overseeing our five offices across the country, and providing key account/framework management services to clients.

In my time at the practice I have worked on many interesting and varied projects. The two projects that I am most proud of are the expansions of BMI Three Shires Hospital in Northampton and Roquette in Corby, demonstrating our experience in the healthcare an industrial/commercial sectors. Both of these multi-million pound expansion projects involved numerous extensions on sensitive, live operational sites. This presented extensive challenges for our team, all of which were overcome by working collaboratively with the clients, other designers and main contractors.

While we ensure that GSS is at the forefront of technology within the architectural sector, one of our fundamental objectives is to do the simple things better than our competitors. This ensures that we deliver a service that our clients appreciate and enjoy, leading to repeat commissions and excellent testimonials and referrals.

GSS is a national architectural practice, founded in Northamptonshire 140 years ago, that has grown to have five offices, effectively covering the whole of England and Wales. We are proud to supply clients with a supportive service, whilst providing creative and adaptable design solutions in an engaging and efficient manner. I am proud of the success that GSS has achieved over my 26 years at the practice; and I am now excited to have the chance of leading the next generation of people at GSS, so they can continue the success story and secure the legacy of GSS for many years to come.
