A Northampton College student is in pole position for an exciting future having been named ‘Student of the Year’ by F1 world champions Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP).

BTEC Level 3 Mechanical Engineering student Levi Medina was rewarded for his commitment to learning, good grades and hard work.

He won £500, a week’s work experience with HPP and a place at the motorsport giant’s Apprenticeship assessment centre – which could lead to a three year apprenticeship with the team.

He said: “I’m incredibly excited to be receiving this award and quite nervous at the same time. This is a great opportunity to get my foot in the door with a company that will give me fantastic work experience and I will feel proud to say I have worked for.”

He follows hot on the heels of previous winner Matthew Quincey, who went on to successfully earn an apprenticeship with HPP.

Stuart Boyer, Employee Development Manager at HPP, said: “Levi has shown a tremendous work ethic and demonstrated the qualities we look for when it comes to identifying our workforce of the future. We look forward to welcoming him on work experience which will give him a great platform on which to showcase his skills.”

His tutor, Neil Tobin, added: “I am extremely proud of Levi, he is an incredibly motivated student and has a real determination to succeed. We have a good relationship with Mercedes and look forward to continuing to work together in the future.”
