Garden centre’s plans for new site win go-ahead from council

PLANS FOR Bosworth’s Garden Centre in Burton Latimer to move to a new site at Irthlingborough have won the green light from North Northamptonshire councillors.

The new site, currently being designed by Northamptonshire-based architects GSSArchitecture, will house increased car parking, retail and catering space alongside the Bosworth’s staple plant and horticultural displays.

The garden centre has been on its current home in Finedon Road since it was founded in 1959 by Frank and Helena Bosworth. It is run today by the third generation of the family.

Owner Sam Bosworth said: “It has been our aim throughout this project to engage and work with other local businesses. GSS have guided us through the design process, putting our vision on to paper, presenting clear and professional plans that have allowed us to engage with all stakeholders.”

The move is expected to create new jobs for the area.

Sustainability plays a major role in the designs for the new site visual pictured above. It will house storage and reuse of rainwater for plant watering, a ground source heat pump for renewable energy and a wildlife corridor to encourage biodiversity of the site. There will also be a nursery space that will allow plants to be grown on site as they are at Burton Latimer, reducing the ‘plant miles’ for many of the plants sold.

“The new garden centre will allow this family-run business to provide an improved service to their customers while building on its fantastic reputation in the area,” says Tom Jagger, partner and lead architect at GSSArchitecture. “We are pleased to be a part of this exciting local scheme and are looking forward to seeing this progress in the near future.”

Says Mr Bosworth: “They have given excellent advice on design detail, which shows a clear understanding of our requirements. We look forward to working with them on the detailed drawings and design detail required for the next phase of the project.”
