Consider the best qualifications and/or experience you can draw on and, most importantly, make sure they have the right to work in the UK. This is a legal requirement which is simple to do and will avoid £1000s in fines. 3. Get the documentation sorted. An employee should have written particulars about their role within two months of starting. A proper contract of employment, disciplinary and grievance policies, a job description and information about key policies will ensure that both parties know exactly what is expected from the outset. 4. Start the employment experience positively for both of you by having a proper induction and probation process. Help the new employee to understand the approach, culture and goals of the business, and use a probation period pragmatically to get them to where you want them to be. 5. Think longer term – how could the role develop? This isn’t about setting expectations for a quick promotion but in the future how can you use the skills, knowledge and experience your new employee has and will develop in the future, to help grow the business further?
