Getting ready for university

AT the end of the first year of A-levels, Bosworth holds a mini-term focused around UCAS.

The aim of the two-week programme is to enable students to start the UCAS process, to inform students about university choices and for them to take part in related exercises that will help them with their applications and personal statements.

This includes: UCAS workshops, presentations and talks by tutors or ex pupils about different universities (Oxbridge, new, medical/dental school, Russell Group, red brick, Scottish and Welsh), a university visit, a team-based charity project, workshops for stud

AT the end of the first year of A-levels, Bosworth holds a mini-term focused around UCAS.

The aim of the two-week programme is to enable students to start the UCAS process, to inform students about university choices and for them to take part in related exercises that will help them with their applications and personal statements.

This includes: UCAS workshops, presentations and talks by tutors or ex pupils about different universities (Oxbridge, new, medical/dental school, Russell Group, red brick, Scottish and Welsh), a university visit, a team-based charity project, workshops for students to work on and be advised about their university applications and choices as well as a variety of fun activities ranging from self-defence training to team building.

The university visit this year was to Nottingham and Nottingham Trent. This visit allows students to look around the university campuses, visit departments of interest and get a feel for university life as well as contrasting city universities with campus style living. Students also received a visit from a former student of Bosworth, Caroline Fong, now a doctor, having studied at Manchester University.

Maria Johnstone, Head of Chemistry, remembered Caroline: “She was a bright, hard-working, dedicated and enthusiastic student.

She was able to assimilate new knowledge instantly and with ease. Caroline joined us in January 2005 and graduated in July 2006. She studied on the intensive 18-month A-level course and completed two years’ worth of work and exams during this time.

Part of an excellent cohort, surrounded by other very academic and ambitious students, she was determined to follow her dream of becoming a doctor. It was a delight to see her after all these years and I admire her dedication and wish her every future success in becoming an oncologist!”

Students are also given the opportunity in their first year to attend the northern university tour in the October half term, this year they will visit: Liverpool Hope, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Loughborough. The aim is for students to be well

informed about the choices on offer and to start their research early, so by the time they start their UCAS application at the end of that year they are fully aware of what to do.

Bosworth hopes that by guiding students to their university of choice and accessing a course that engages and interests them, students will progress into a long and fulfilling career.
