Help to negotiate the financial maze

By Peter Douglas

Business Finance Services

DO you have a small business that you are working hard to grow? Are you contemplating buying an existing small business that has gone through a difficult time, or are you simply thinking about starting a new business? Whichever of these may apply the next question is – do you need help in achieving your aims?

At Business Finance Services we regularly see situations where small business owners/managers spend far too much of their valuable time trying to solve problems that could best be solved by calling in specialist advisors. Not only can this lead to management time being wasted but, in extreme cases, it can lead to mistakes being made that can lead in turn to loss of reputation or even to legal problems.

Recently we had a classic example of this. We were approached by a client who had a struggling business that urgently needed funding. Unfortunately, when we took a close look at the business we were obliged to refer them to our associates at OPUS Restructuring LLP. Just as well we did as, before our intervention, the client was contemplating closing the business in a way that would undoubtedly have given the directors legal problems.

Thus, while our main function is to act as commercial finance brokers and to help our clients find the most appropriate form of funding, we can also offer help and advice in many other areas or, if we can’t, we know someone who can. What we are saying, therefore, is never be afraid to ask for help. Even if some level of fees are involved, it can still save you time and money.

On this general subject, it has become apparent to us that a lot of business people are unaware of the many finance options that are available to SMEs today. For this reason we have been running a series of free seminars on the general theme of Negotiating The Commercial Finance Maze. The next in the series, on the subject of Alternative Sources of Finance for the SME, will be held in at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel at ML Stadium, Milton Keynes on Thursday 19 October. Places can be reserved via the BFS website at www.bufinserv.co.uk
