Lions roar for local lock

RUGBY giants Bill Beaumont, Roger Uttley and Dusty Hare are among a plethora of former British Lions to join Northampton duo George North and Courtney Lawes, who proudly pulled on the red jersey in New Zealand this summer, in support of fellow Saintsman Christian Day.

The legends of the game will appear at a unique British Lions Dinner at Franklin’s Gardens on Tuesday 24 October, helping to raise funds for the lock – who has been awarded a testimonial to mark his tenth season at the club – and his two chosen charities, The Leon Barwell Foundation, which supports families where the adult is affected by cancer, and Niamh’s Next Step, set up to help children fight the childhood cancer neuroblastoma.

For Bill, whose son was at school with Christian, the event represents the opportunity to make amends for a chance remark when the boys were junior players together: “I got to know Christian’s Dad, Trevor, quite well as we stalked the touchline and advised him that Christian would be better off concentrating on his studies and going to Oxford, rather than turning pro – but what did I know?

“Christian has progressed to be one of the Premiership’s greats and a cornerstone of any team that he has played in.”

Bill, who is the Chairman of World Rugby, is guest speaker at the event and is also among the many heroes from the sport, former and current, to pay tribute to the second row in his testimonial annual.

In it, Tom Wood describes why Daysy, as he’s affectionately known, is the ideal man to know when it comes to DIY, while Dylan Hartley explains why his fellow forward could be compared to a Hereford cow.

Tickets for the British Lions Dinner, which includes a champagne reception, three-course meal and wine, are now on sale priced at £95.
