Mixed use gateway developments

GSSArchitecture is an award-winning, national practice with five offices across the country, but with strong ties to Northamptonshire in particular. Founded in Kettering 140 years ago, with the head office still based there today, it is clear why GSS has a strong commitment to improvements within the county and wider region.

With a rapidly growing population and a significant increase in demand for residential and commercial property, there is now a rush to construct new homes, and to provide employment opportunities to accelerate economic development.

GSS is involved in a range of processes making up this regional growth, including currently working on a new retail and fast food cluster at Corby’s Southern Gateway. The development, which already has a hotel, pub/restaurant and GSS-designed fuel filling station, will provide a further range of services and amenities to the south of Corby, including a McDonald’s restaurant, Costa and Domino’s Pizza restaurant, which has recently started on site. This will significantly enhance and support the existing facilities, and benefit the wider Corby area. The masterplan shows the layout of the retail project currently under construction.

As part of another gateway project, GSS are working on a new residential development in the town, delivering a sustainable urban extension of 4,500 new homes over the next few years, with the first stage beginning this year.

The experience that GSSArchitecture has in the delivery of larger-scale urban developments and regeneration is varied, and often bespoke to clients’ requirements, and the portfolio ranges from small residential projects to commercial developments of up to 100 acres on mixed-use, greenfield, regeneration and urban city centre sites.

GSS is currently working on various projects as part of the Northampton Town Centre Regeneration Scheme, which includes private rental sector accommodation, retail units, and mixed use and care facilities. By demolishing existing vacant and derelict buildings, allowing works to begin, these neighbourhoods will benefit from the new facilities, and the employment opportunities that they bring with them.

The variety of experience that GSS has in the commercial, retail, industrial and residential sectors allows for a wide range of projects to be taken on, in support of regeneration schemes such as these.
