Based on a successful scheme designed to match businesses with a relevant skilled workforce – made bespoke for Northamptonshire logistics company, Knights of Old, in 2012 and 2013 – a new driver academy to support the funding of LGV training has been created for Northampton courier, Action Express.

The Job Broker team at Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP), who were approached directly by Action Express, engaged with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Northampton College to develop the sector-based academy which, following an initial assessment day, resulted in nine candidates being offered a place on a two-week training course at the beginning of August

The initiative is the result of a collaboration between NEP and key partners to establish a tailored programme of support to maximise employment opportunities in Northamptonshire.

Jo Stewart, Job Broker for NEP, said: “Northamptonshire’s logistics sector is an incredibly important industry to the Northamptonshire economy with 40,000 currently employed, anticipated to rise to 52,000 by 2020. This progressive, sector-based approach to recruitment demonstrates what can be achieved from strong working relations between NEP and its partners.

“We are actively looking to expand this scheme to other sectors and would be delighted to hear from other Northamptonshire companies who may wish to get involved.”

Action Express Managing Director, Elaine Harries, added: “Until we approached the Job Broker team at NEP, we were struggling to find an ideal solution for our training and recruitment requirements. This experience has saved us valuable time and resources and provided an opportunity for potential new employees to match their skills with the needs of our company. It’s a win, win situation.”
